the AC compressor runs with the same drain on the system no matter what. And yes turning on the heat acts as a secondary radiator, helping to cool your engine, but not you. if your car starts to warm up in traffic putting it in nuetral and revving the engine slightly works to pump water faster through the system as well as pull in more air.
